Abstrakt | Nowadays, we can observe in different business and academicals environments an ongoing dialog about knowledge – based economy, due to the fact, that economies are increasingly based on knowledge and information. Practically it means, that companies have started looking for answers for plenty important questions – what ‘knowledge’ exactly means and what kind of knowledge is significant from business continuity perspective? What exactly is a driver of productivity and economic growth? Business executives have to face also other challenges: how all this knowledge has to be managed and how to adapt to swiftly changing circumstances? Should it be centralized in shared services centres forms or maybe outsourced based on business process outsourcing strategy? Do companies should establish cooperation with universities or R&D institutes based on the cluster structure? In this article the author will characterized the knowledge as a source of competitiveness, increasing importance of science and try to summarize best practices in that field. |

Title | The Competitiveness of Apple Exports from Poland to the Markets of Commonwealth Independent States |
Słowa kluczowe | eksport, import, jabłka, konkurencyjność |
Key words | export, import, apples, competitiveness |
Abstract | The aim of the research was to determine the competitiveness of apple export from Poland to the CIS markets. In the paper the most important producers and net importers of apples from CIS were identified. Using the ex-post measures, the competitive position of Polish exports to selected CIS markets was determined. In 2006-2016, Poland was the largest supplier of apples to Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, and in 2006-2014 to Russia as well. The competitive position of apple exports from Poland decreased in the years 2014-2015 on the Belarusian market, and increased in the Kazakh and Ukrainian. As a result of the Russian embargo on the import of apples from the EU, the competitive position of supplies from Serbia, China, Moldova and Belarus increased in this market. |

Abstrakt | The paper sets out the key principles for taxation of agriculture in selected European Union countries. The theoretical foundations of tax systems in the context of their functions and features specified as desirable in the literature are discussed. EU agricultural taxation systems are presented in reference to optimisation and tax competitiveness. Some shared features of these agricultural taxation systems were pointed out and their division in two basic models (the British model and the continental model), which was presented taking as example the countries in which these models operate. Taxation of income derived from agricultural business activity is a natural direction of changes in tax systems. The tax policy implemented in the European Union countries in relation to agriculture make use of the principle of tax justice to the highest possible extent. The diversity of the tax rules and structures applied in the EU makes it possible to tax agricultural income without limiting the development potential of agricultural enterprises (farms), and often stimulates them. The form of individual tax systems results from numerous economic, social and political circumstances. Special tax treatment of agriculture is expressed through tax construction elements, e.g. right to deduct the value of generated loss or investment expenditure from taxable income. |

Słowa kluczowe | carbon footprint, beef production, emission of greenhouse gases, life cycle assessment, agriculture |
Key words | carbon footprint, beef production, emission of greenhouse gases, life cycle assessment, agriculture |
Abstrakt | Animal production is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One of the major challenges in sustainable management is to mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing GHG emissions. The diversity of animal production systems and accompanying diversification of technological processes, mean that specific production effects can be obtained at different levels of GHG emissions. The aim of the study was to determine the carbon footprint (CF) of beef cattle grown in a conventional system (i.e. indoor confinement). The research was carried out on the beef cattle farm belonging to a large-area enterprise, Długie Stare Ltd. The beef cattle production system consisted of the following subsystems: a basic breeding herd (consisting of suckler cows, replacement heifers and calves up to 6.5 months), breeding heifers, breeding bulls and fattening bulls. The method of life cycle analysis (LCA) in the stages from "cradle-to-farmgate" was used to assess the GHG emissions associated with the production of beef cattle. The average CF in the entire beef cattle production system was 25.43 kg of CO2 kg-1 of live weight of marketed cattle, while in the individual subsystems of basic breeding herd, breeding heifers, breeding bulls and fattening bulls, the CF (after GHG allocation) was: 11.0 kg CO2 eq., 34.30 kg CO2 eq., 27.32 and 25.40 kg CO2 eq., respectively. GHG emissions associated with young calves staying in the cow-calf pairs until weaning (in the period from 0-6.5 months), had a decisive influence on the final CF in each of the subsystems of beef cattle production. The second important factor directly affecting the CF was GHG emissions related to methane (CH4) enteric fermentation and manure management. Knowledge of factors affecting the CF structure allows better identification of critical areas in production processes with high GHG emission potential. Information on the CF of beef cattle and beef meat responds to a wider societal demand for the ecological characteristics of market products, which ultimately contributes to improving their market competitiveness. |

Title | Competitiveness of the Economy of the Małopolska Region and the Development of the Startup Ecosystem |
Słowa kluczowe | konkurencyjność, innowacyjność, startup, ekosystem startupowy |
Key words | competitiveness, innovation, startup, startup ecosystem |
Abstract | In the 21st century, a region's competitive economy is an economy based on knowledge and new technologies. Startups with the startup ecosystem have become a determinant of a region's innovation. The article aims to show the dependence between the development of the Krakow startup environment and the increase in the competitiveness of the Malopolska region. The number of patents granted for national inventions by the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland, the dynamics of employment in R&D, capital expenditures on R&D, the number of enterprises with foreign capital and GDP per capita in current prices were considered the basic factors affecting the competitiveness of Malopolska. After the analysis of the correlation, it was shown that the strongest relationships occur between GDP per capita in current prices and the number of enterprises with foreign capital and investment outlays for R&D. The main city center, which is in the analyzed area of Krakow, has become a magnet for gathering people, creating startups, building an innovative economy and all business facilities. The Krakow startup ecosystem has a positive impact on the competitiveness of the Malopolska region due to the accumulation of highly qualified social capital, domestic and foreign investors, foundations and institutions supporting originators in materializing the idea, activities of institutions and public administration towards cooperation with the science and business area. |

W badaniu wykorzystano wskaźnik relatywnej przewagi handlowej RTA. Badanie to poprzedzono omówieniem wyników handlu zagranicznego. Źródłem danych była baza danych handlowych WITS-Comtrade. Analizę przeprowadzono na poziomie sekcji HS. Badanie udowodniło, że handel zagraniczny Polski charakteryzuje zróżnicowany poziom przewag komparatywnych. Spośród dwudziestu sekcji HS, w 2016 r. Polska posiadała przewagi komparatywne w handlu produktami dwóch rolno-spożywczych i siedmiu pozostałych sekcji. Na sekcje te przypadało odpowiednio ok. 9% i 50% wartości obrotów handlowych Polski. Rozwój handlu zagranicznego produktami rolno-spożywczymi Polski, a także dość znaczące przewagi komparatywne w handlu tymi produktami wskazują na konkurencyjność i duże znaczenie polskiego sektora rolno-spożywczego dla gospodarki narodowej. |
Abstract | Because of globalization and economic integration, the competitiveness of entities is more and more often analyzed in the context of their links with the international market. The aim of the article is to assess the comparative advantages in Poland's foreign trade in agri-food products in comparison to trade in other products. The study uses the relative trade advantage indices RTA. This study was preceded by a discussion of the results of foreign trade. The source of data was the WITS-Comtrade database. The study showed that Poland's foreign trade is characterized by a diversified level of comparative advantages. Of the twenty HS sections, in 2016 Poland had comparative advantages in trade of products from two agri-food sections and seven other sections. These sections accounted for approximately 9% and 50% of Poland's trade turnover, respectively. The development of Polish foreign trade in agri-food products, as well as quite significant comparative advantages in trade of these products, indicate the competitiveness and high importance of the Polish agri-food sector for the national economy. |

Słowa kluczowe | przemysł spożywczy, produkcja, zatrudnienie, parytet, wydajność pracy |
Key words | food industry, production, employment, parity, labor productivity, Poland, UE-28 |
Abstract | The aim of this study was to show changes in labor productivity and concentration of production in the Polish food industry against the background of European Union countries and the indication of the causes (factors) which caused these changes. Poland's accession to the European Union has proved beneficial for the development of the Polish food industry. The dynamic development of production in this sector after 2004 has been accompanied by improved labor productivity, which is one of the main determinants of a company's competitiveness in the market. The assessment of changes in labor productivity was made at current prices, as well as at comparable prices, taking into account the purchasing power of currencies of individual member states. The method of compound interest was used to determine the average annual changes. In the years 2004-2014, labor productivity measured by the value of sold production increased in the Polish food industry (in comparable prices) from 141.2 to 225.3 thousand Euro/employee and was only about 10 percentage points lower than the EU-28 average. Importantly, productivity growth has occurred, although to a varying extent, in all sectors of the food industry in Poland. In the analyzed period, the number of food processing enterprises decreased in most EU-28 countries and the concentration of food production increased. Such changes have occurred in the largest EU-28 food producers, to which Poland is also counted. |

Abstract | The aim of this paper was to assess the changes in employment in rural areas of Mazowieckie voivodship in the period 2006–2016. The author used shift-share analysis to decompose the employment growth in poviats into sectoral-mix effect and competitive effect. The results shows that in the majority of poviats the number of employed persons has grown as the competitiveness of local economy improved. In poviats with a high share of agricultural sector in the structure of employed persons the growth rate was relatively low. |

Abstrakt | This paper focuses attention on the fact that the V4 (Visegrad) countries in general are poorly prepared to capitalize on the opportunities offered by the fourth industrial revolution, and less protected against the risks created by it. First of all economic structural indicators prove that the economies of the V4 countries are still not knowledge based, and can be characterized by low value added activities. In some cases Poland stands out with slightly better results, but all in all V4 countries lag behind the economically more advanced countries for all the analysed indicators. Secondly these countries do not Invest enough into their human resources. The article suggests that unless the V4 countries start putting stronger emphasis on developing human skills and local knowledge they will lose a historic opportunity for becoming successful nations which are able to benefit from the ongoing processes of the fourth industrial revolution by moving up on the value chain. |

Title | Conditional development of agribusiness-oriented agricultural enterprises in a competitive and globalized world |
Słowa kluczowe | gospodarstwa i przedsiębiorstwa rolnicze, bariery rozwoju, efektywność gospodarowania, konkurencyjność |
Key words | farms and agricultural companies, barriers to their development, economic efficiency, competitiveness |
Abstrakt | W opracowaniu przedstawiono ekonomiczne, społeczne, środowiskowe i administracyjne uwarunkowania rozwoju przedsiębiorstw rolnych, głównie z chowem trzody chlewnej i bydła. Wskazano czynniki ekonomiczne i organizacyjne skłaniające przedsiębiorstwa rolne do zwiększania skali produkcji. |
Abstract | The study presents economic, social, environmental and administrative factors influencing the development of agricultural enterprises, mainly the ones breeding pigs and cattle. Economic and organizational factors inducing agricultural companies to increase the scale of production are shown. The economic factors are associated with faster growth of labor costs in the national economy and the prices of means of agricultural production than of the sales prices of agricultural products. The organizational factors are connected with the growing requirements of trade companies and agricultural processing in terms of size, quality and timely deliveries. The increase in the scale of production can lead to excessive burden on the environment and growth of odor nuisance to the non-agricultural population in rural areas. As a result, it can cause social conflict situations. In addition, there are administrative barriers hindering the implementation of construction projects related to the development of animal production. |

Abstrakt | W warunkach rosnącej globalizacji i proeksportowego charakteru polskiego ogrodnictwa koniecznym jest systematyczne badanie pozycji konkurencyjnej gospodarstw ogrodniczych, w tym konkurencyjności kosztowej. W pracy dokonano pionowej i poziomej analizy porównawczej kosztów w gospodarstwach ogrodniczych sześciu krajów UE, największych producentów owoców i warzyw. |
Abstract | In the conditions of growing globalization and export-oriented nature of the Polish horticulture systematic studies of the competitive position of horticultural businesses are necessary, including cost competitiveness. The paper presents the vertical and horizontal analysis of the costs in horticultural farms in six EU countries, the largest fruit and vegetable producers. It has been shown that Poland still has a favorable competitive position in terms of costs, but their relatively fast growth and increasing production cost-effectiveness gradually make it lower. |

Abstract | This paper is an attempt at filling the cognitive gap in the effect that human capital has on farms competitiveness. Education is the most measurable characteristic of human capital so the purpose of this paper is evaluating the effect of the manager’s level of education on the competiveness of the commercial farms. The surveys were carried out based on accounting data provided by commodity farms participating in the Polish FADN in 2010-2012. The outcomes indicate a competitive advantage of farms run by managers who completed higher education over entities run by farmers without higher education. Surveys also demonstrated a competitive advantage to the extent of land productivity, equipment of land with technical facilities and labour on farms run by managers with higher education in comparison to farms whose managers had no such education. |

Słowa kluczowe | produkcja wołowiny, eksport, import, konsumpcja, ceny |
Key words | beef market, exports, imports, price, consumption |
W Polsce występowała tendencja wzrostowa w produkcji wołowiny i spadkowa w konsumpcji. Rynki zagraniczne są głównym kierunkiem zagospodarowania rosnącej produkcji i powstających nadwyżek. Takim kierunkom zmian sprzyja konkurencyjność cenowa polskiej wołowiny. Do 2025 r. możliwy jest dalszy wzrost produkcji wołowiny w Polsce wynikający głównie z popytu zagranicznego. |
Abstract | The study presents changes in world beef production in the years 2000-2016. Changes in the main producers and consumers, as well as exporters and importers were presented. In the world's major beef producers, consumption growth was lower than production growth, what increased their export capacity. In the years 2000-2016, the growth rate of international trade was higher than production, what led to an increase in the share of exports in production. Particularly high growth in production and exports was noticeable in Brazil and India. Prices of beef were characterized by an upward trend. In Poland there was an upward trend in beef production and decline in consumption. Foreign markets are the main direction for the development of rising production. . These changes were the result of price competitiveness of Polish beef, both on the EU and other markets. By 2025, further growth in beef production in Poland may be possible resulting mainly from foreign demand. |

Słowa kluczowe | rentowność, konkurencyjność, grupy i organizacje producentów owoców i warzyw |
Key words | profitability, competitiveness, fruit and vegetables producers and organizations, Poland |
Abstract | The aim of the article was to present the relationship between the factors influencing the profitability of fruit and vegetable producers and organizations using the Du Pont model. Analysis was conducted on data from the financial statements of the aforementioned entities operating in the territory of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodeship in the years 2005-2014. The results show a declining viability of existing units, which results from the high cost of servicing foreign capital, reduced profitability and reduced turnover of assets. These factors have resulted in negative financial leverage. However, despite unfavorable factors, the average return on equity over the period considered was positive. This allows for the possibility that, with sound financial management, producers and organizations of fruit and vegetable growers will in future have the opportunity to generate resources that will sustain and even develop a concentrated supply in this market. Increasing profitability of these units will also help satisfy the expectations of their members. |

Słowa kluczowe | infrastruktura, konkurencyjność regionu, obszary wiejskie |
Key words | infrastructure, competitiveness of the region, rural areas |
Szczególnie szybkie tempo wzrostu charakteryzowało rozwój systemu odprowadzania i oczyszczania ścieków. |

Słowa kluczowe | konkurencyjność, pozycja konkurencyjna, gospodarka Polski i nowoprzyjętych krajów UE |
Key words | competitiveness, competitive position, economy of Poland and newly admitted EU countries |
Abstract | The aim of the study was to show the international position and competitiveness of the Polish economy rece in comparison with the economies of other countries newly admitted to the European Union in 2007-2017. It was found that in the ranking of competitiveness of the World Economic Forum analysed countries were above the thirtieth position. In the last decade there has been a deterioration of the competitive position in most of the analysed countries, while Poland has improved its position by 19 positions. Poland is currently in 36th position. The main weakness of the Polish economy is its insufficient innovativeness, insufficient labour market efficiency and imperfection of institutions supporting the economy. |
